Biological significance of higher order chromatin structure in interphase and especially during cell division remains poorly understood. In the past decade two essential component processes of higher order chromosome structure formation were characterized from the molecular biology perspective. These two processes, chromosome condensation and sister chromatid cohesion (SCC), both ensure faithful distribution of sister chromatids during mitosis and meiosis. We investigate chromosome condensation and SCC using methods of genetics, cell biology and molecular biology. |
